Virtual Learning Expectations

We are looking forward to the great learning adventure ahead.  Canvas, our learning platform, is your child’s Classroom, and all links and lessons will be delivered in Canvas (the app is on your child’s iPad). A few tips as you help your child prepare for his/her first day:

  • Learning Space
    • Quiet and distraction-free
    • Organized
    • Space for the iPad and area to write
    • Paper and pencils
    • Copy of their daily schedule should be posted in the learning space
    • Clock
  • Routines
    • Regular bed time
    • Regular wake up time
    • Breakfast before school starts
    • Getting ready for school (e.g., brush teeth, comb hair, get dressed, etc.)
  • Technology
    • iPad fully charged each day (plug nearby)
    • Student knows how to access their Canvas page
    • Know where to get tech help: https://www.apsva.us/esonline/

  • School Day (9:00 a.m. – 2:20 p.m. Tuesday – Friday)
    • Students should log on to their Teacher’s Morning Meeting at 8:55 a.m. – this is where we build community
    • Student should be ready to learn and actively participating in the Morning Meeting
    • Student schedule is posted on the teacher’s Canvas page
      • Student will be guided by the teacher of where to go and when each day
    • Teachers will “flip” their classroom for whole group teaching
      • Your child will watch a pre-recorded video of the lesson and then meet with the teacher in smaller groups to practice the learning and ask questions
      • Students will have assignments that require them to do independent practice (for example, reading a book or writing a story) off of the iPad
    • Movement Breaks (5-10 minutes) are provided throughout the day
    • Lunch and Recess are independent and a great time to recharge the iPad and take a longer movement break away from technology
    • Closing Circle happens for all grades at 2:10 p.m.  It is important your child attend Closing Circle to review the day and prepare for the next day
  • Asynchronous Learning Day (Mondays)
    • Students will be provided with activities by the teacher
  • Homework Expectations
    • All Students should engage in 30 minutes of reading of their choice every night
